World War 1
this collection consists largely of two albums of remarkable images taken by the Nicolson family from ships of the British fleet from 1914 to 1919. Three of the Nicolson sons - Arthur J., Harold Stanley ("Stanley") and Lionel, were officers in the Royal Naval Reserve on ships of the British fleet during World War 1. Stanley Nicolson, who was particuarly interested in photography, was amongst the inspection party which boarded German ships as they surrendered in the Forth, and he was also present when the fleet was scuttled at Scapa Flow in Orkney.

His remarkable collection of pictures not only details these events, but also shows rare images of German sailors on board their vessels, some of whom may not have survived the subsequent sinking of their ship. The images also show the crews of the British fleet at work and leisure. It is a truly remarkable record, and we hope that by making it available to the world via the Web we are adding important images to the international documentation from this period.
