This telescope was used by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) on the Fetlar Bird Sanctuary in 1960s and 1970s when Snowy Owls bred there. It was used to watch for possible egg collectors. At the time, Fetlar was the only place in Britain where Snowy Owls bred, and birdwatchers came from all over the country and further afield to see them.
