The booklet was rescued by T. Thomason from a bonfire of documents at the Fetlar Manse. See rest of this section for the remaining pages, which effectively give a list of the population in Fetlar in each of the townships during this period. This was the period at the very beginning of the Clearances, when the first Fetlar-based Sir Arthur Nicolson removed a large proportion of his tenants to make way for sheep. Over around 40 years, this had a devastating effect on the island's population. |
