This breeches buoy was used by Fetlar Auxilary Coastguard to rescue the crew of the Russian trawler "Maia" on February 2nd, 1962. Twelve men were brought ashore. Fetlar Auxiliary Coastguard was awarded the national shield for the best rescue service of 1962, shared with Holy Island.
