Fetlar People Since cameras and photography became available, pictures of family and friends have adorned the walls of Fetlar houses, and in some cases magnificent family albums have been kept.
Many of the surnames known in the island 100 years ago have now died out, although their descendants probably still live in Fetlar under one of the few remaining family names. Around the middle of the 20th century, Fetlar experienced what has become known as the "missing generation", when many of those born in the early 1900s did not marry. Names like Laurenson, Gardner, Bruce, Williamson and Petrie are now names of the past, but thankfully a vast array of photographs remain to remind us.
