Brough Lodge Collection
The main laird's house in Fetlar, Brough Lodge, has been uninhabited since the 1970s, but there are plans for it to be renovated in the near future by Brough Lodge Trust. The collection from the house, however, has been donated to Fetlar Museum Trust, and it is so large that only a small proportion of it can be displayed at any one time.
The photographs and artefacts belonged to the Nicolson family, mostly to a branch who were born in Australia and inherited (in 1890) from a distant cousin -Sir Arthur Nicolson - who had built the house in 1820. Thankfully, they were avid amateur photographers, and were fairly meticulous in documenting the images, so we are able to piece together the history like so many parts of a jigsaw puzzle. Even more importantly, some of the photographs they took are of international importance (see World War 1 exhibition).
