When Sir Arthur T.B.R. Nicolson travelled from Australia to take up the Brough Estate, he is said to have disowned what his predecessor did during the Clearances, and he apparently instructed his sons never to do this to their tenants. He is said to have managed the estate efficiently, and to have been well-liked by his staff.
